Why Should You Educate Yourself?

Thinking with Aristotle

“Now each man judges well the things he knows, and of these he is a good judge. And so the man who has been educated in a subject is a good judge of that subject, and the man who has received an all-round education is a good judge in general.”

Aristotle, Nicomachean Ethics, 1.3

Dear friend,

Warm greetings to you, my esteemed companion in the pursuit of wisdom. I am delighted to share another letter from Wisdom Epistles with you as we explore the profound wisdom within Aristotle's teachings.

In our world where information is readily accessible but often overwhelming, and where entertainment grips people's interests and habits, it is crucial to recognize the importance of education in our pursuit of a good life. Aristotle's timeless wisdom reminds us that each person possesses the ability to judge well in the areas of their knowledge, making them proficient judges in those subjects. By actively seeking education, we expand our knowledge and equip ourselves to make sound judgments in specific areas of expertise. Moreover, a well-rounded education grants us the opportunity to become good judges in general, enabling us to develop a broader understanding of the intricacies and complexities of the world we inhabit.

Allow me to share a story that beautifully illustrates the power of education. In ancient times, there lived a young man named Callias. Born into a modest family, he harbored dreams of achieving greatness but lacked the means and opportunities to pursue his ambitions. One day, he encountered a wise philosopher who recognized his thirst for knowledge and potential for greatness. The philosopher took Callias under his wing and became his mentor, guiding him in the pursuit of education and wisdom.

Callias embraced this opportunity with unwavering determination. He delved into a rigorous course of study, dedicating countless hours to learning and contemplation. The philosopher imparted not only knowledge but also instilled in Callias a love for wisdom and a deep understanding of the virtues. Through the teachings of his mentor, Callias developed into a learned and virtuous individual, possessing not only intellectual acumen but also moral integrity.

As years passed, Callias's knowledge and wisdom brought him recognition and success. He became renowned for his ability to navigate complex challenges with grace and insight. Not only did he excel in his chosen field, but he also became a respected leader within his community. Callias's education not only transformed his own life but also inspired those around him to seek knowledge and strive for personal growth. So, through his example, he showed that education is not merely an informative tool but a transformative tool that shapes our character and empowers us to contribute meaningfully to society.

Now, as you reflect on your own journey of education and personal growth, ponder the following questions:

  1. What area of knowledge do you feel competent in? How can you further deepen your understanding and expertise in this field? And what other areas of knowledge do you need to improve?

  2. If you are not actively pursuing learning for yourself, what do you think is the reason? Why do you hesitate in educating yourself?

  3. How can you prioritize and nurture your education to deepen your wisdom? Consider the methods you can employ this week to further your learning, such as reading books, listening to podcasts, and watching videos.

So this is the message for you: you should educate yourself and strive to learn better and more for a happier life. By nurturing a commitment to ongoing education and deep reflection, you contribute not only to your own growth but also to the positive transformation of society at large.

Stay tuned for next week's dose of wisdom.
Until then, may your thoughts be deep, and may your learning be enjoyable.

With warm regards,

Aristotle's Disciple
