How Do You Envision Success?
Thinking with Aristotle
Dear friend,
A heartfelt welcome to all of you, my cherished companions on this intellectual odyssey. Today, we venture into a new exploration in our Wisdom Epistles series, one that will provoke deep thought and spark an inner transformation.
As we navigate the complexities of our lives, we are often confronted with the notion of "success" and its implications. Our modern world tends to equate success with material wealth, status, and power. However, a profound understanding of success, as illuminated by Aristotle's philosophy, transcends such superficial measures.
Imagine a world where success is determined not by the size of our bank accounts but by the strength of our character and the impact we make on others. Aristotle's teachings encourage us to seek a life of fulfillment and flourishing – eudaimonia – by cultivating virtues, nurturing personal growth, and forging meaningful relationships. True success, as Aristotle would have it, is the pursuit of excellence in every aspect of our lives, that is guided by our deepest values and exemplary virtues.
Then, reflect on these questions this week: What does success mean to you in your current stage of life? Can you recall an instance of success achieved by virtues such as courage, integrity, and fairness? And, for success and influence, what virtue do you need to develop the most right now?
This week, I invite you to delve into the essential components of success. Be courageous to redefine success against the negative forces of the world, focusing on moral character, compassion, and values. Cherish the accomplishments that enrich your soul and lead to a life that is morally good.
Stay tuned for the next installment of our Wisdom Epistles series. Until then, may your pursuit of success be grounded in your most profound values and bring joy and meaning to your life.
Warmest regards,
Aristotle's Disciple
